Chaos in the hood…

or how I spent my Friday night.

I spent most of my evening fretting over the youngin who had gone off with a friend to a car show over in another county. His time frame to be home was midnight. He was late. So I sat up waiting since the OH (other half) was tired and needed his rest so he could drive himself and the youngin to Florida today for an extended visit with his SIL and nephew.

I waited and waited… and fretted because he was not answering his cell phone (it had gone dead with his useage). Finally fell asleep on the couch waiting and fretting… and was awakened by him coming in at 1am. (Yes, I raised a fuss over it). I crawled off to bed with a stiff neck… and was awakened again not 20 minutes later by the youngin yelling that my car had been hit.

Now remember I am half awake, but mostly still asleep… and was going “no way”… (I thought he was sleep walking or something like that). I look up and see through my curtains that there are blue lights flashing outside. I start swearing but got up and pulled some clothes on.

Upon walking outside I see nothing but blue lights… cars and cars of them and a big blue truck with its doors open right behind mine. First thing out of my mouth is “No freaking way!” Another neighbor quickly said… “It’s ok… it looks like he just bumped it.”

To get the absurdity of all this… my Jeep was parked in my yard and we live on a one way in and one way out neighborhood… and we are in a cul-de-sac on the farend of the ‘hood. Per all the 7 police officers that were outside… the guy was blue-lighted on the main thoroughfare for a broken tail light (his first bad idea)… and he decided to run (his second bad idea). He pulled into our neighborhood (third bad idea – it was raining) and apparently was driving too fast up the hill to our cul-de-sac… he then hit his brakes and slid straight into my Jeep. Then… yes, there is more… he ditched the truck and took off on foot (his fourth bad idea). Every house in this ‘hood has dogs… so easy to track where someone is misbehaving.

He managed to ditch the cops… get back to the main road… avoid some more cops and make it, get this, almost 3 miles away… running… and yes, he was drunk… and probably puked a few times from the effort. They brought him back while they finished writing up all their charges: DUI, hit and run, resisting arrest, broken taillight, lapsed insurance (He had just bought the truck less than a month ago [tag said 1/22/09]), and some more charges that I was not close enough to overhear. We all came to the conclusion that he apparently was not from around here because of where he had decided to try and ditch the cops… and that his license did not have a local address.

I ended up having to wait for the county sherrif to show up for a police report to be made for him hitting my car. (Not my idea… but theirs so they would have another charge to hit the guy with) By the time I got to bed again it was well after 3am.

Turns out that this morning the OH walked outside and found a cellphone that had either been dropped by the drunk or one of the cops. We had to call the sherrif out again to pick up the cell. One of our other neighbors saw the old man outside… and filled him in a a few details that the cops didn’t know… like…

He actually just bought the house up on the corner. Yea, a neighbor had done this…. grrr. He ditched because he was on parole and because he was drunk. Now he has more felony charges and he won’t be getting out of the slammer for a long while. He also worked for my plumbers (the bathroom remodeling guy) father-in-law… at his plumbing business. His stupidity has probably lost him a house, a new truck and a job.

It just amazes me still how stupid some people can be! Needless to say, I woke up with a major headache this morning but I still managed to see off the boys… they left about 2 hours ago.

Pics below… click to make larger. (Edit: in the picture entitled “My jeep in the yard” you can see where the guy left rubber from slamming on his brakes. The last picture that shows his house was actually taken from my yard… so I guess he thought if he could just get home he would be ok. OY!)

OH MAN, it never rains but it pours!!! Truly you were lucky that it wasn’t worse than that……with the Jeep. About all you lost was some sleep….LOL!!

Drunk boneheads. He probably would have tried to run even if he’d been sober.

Damage doesn’t look too bad but you might want to have the crush foam under the bumper checked to make sure it didn’t compress. You want that working if you get rear ended…
