There are two constants in most soldier’s lives; Dust and Mud.
I have been deployed into Eastern Europe twice and southwest Asia, and the ONLY things that they have in common are Dust and Mud.
I have spent three years on Ft Sill, Oklahoma and, in the field; it’s constantly either Dust or Mud.
I have spent more than fourteen years in Germany. Every time we go to the field we get to choose between, you guessed it, Dust or Mud.
You see, the Army puts medium sized gravel down on the “tank trails.†These are specific roads designed for vehicles that run on caterpillar style tracks. When a 25 ton (or heavier) tracked vehicle rolls over the gravel, it slowly turns it into a powdery dust. When this dust gets wet, it turns into a loose mud that sticks to everything (just like the dust does).
When I miss my children’s birthdays, I have Dust or Mud.
When I miss funerals or weddings, I have Dust or Mud.
Dust and Mud are what I am most used to dealing with over the last 19 years. Maybe, in a few more years, I won’t have to deal with Dust and Mud any more…

hehehe I am betting you will have the most immaculate lawn on the block! The grass so thick and soft you will want to walk barefoot on it from dawn to dusk.
i have snow, and when you get back stateside I invite you to come see a place that is less dusty or muddy than those you described. We DO appreciate the work you are doing there, regardless of what CNN seems to be saying. We salute you, and your team.
Time to pave or get some mud wrestling going.
Dust and mud, dust and mud…you have to make a country song out of that some how. Or one of those count down songs at least.
No sir I aint seen no flood.
All that’s here is dust and mud.
My socks and shoes are full of crud.
All that’s here is dust and mud.
So much spent on soap and suds.
Just to wash out dust and mud.
Hyup Two Three and four…
Try and have a good weekend.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Huggles
OK, I’m STILL chuckling over Phoenix’s comment about the immaculate lawn. I can so picture Carlo toiling and watering until it’s a lush green. I try to find a bit of good in everything, and I have to say, I’m stumped. Dust and Mud, not much good I can say about them. Except maybe….a mud facial? At least it’s not negative numbers and you’re not freezing your hiney off! Carlo…Thank you and your men for doing such a great job.
I can hear Raggedy picking her tune out now.
I think we’re gonna be hearing Raggedy’s song on the airwaves soon! Thank you, Carlo for keeping in touch with us. Yes, we appreciate you and the others so very much
