Courtesy ought to be more common than it is.

It seems that my son has developed an attitude. Mind you, it doesn’t surprise me, considering who his parents are (yes, I take equal blame for his ‘tude, it isn’t all my ex’s fault), but it does surprise me how it comes out.

I picked him up today so that he could spend the evening, the night and most of the day tomorrow with me, and the ex told me that he has a new favorite saying when he is by himself and somebody checks on him. He says, “Hey, who invited you to my party?” Now, in a few years that will be annoying, but now, since he’s only three, it’s kind of cute.

Where is the line between cute and irritating? When does something that used to be cute become annoying? When a child says something at age three it’s cute, but ten years later it’s disrespect. Hmmmm. Maybe it’s just the fact that little people, right up until they get influenced by others, are our little ones. Maybe that’s the difference. Or, more likely, maybe it’s that we expect someone to understand courtesy at age thirteen that they didn’t at age three.

If that’s the case, what about those idiots that are thirty and still don’t understand common courtesy?
