Malicious Blogs And The Aftermath For This Newbie

Since I am extremely new to this, I should have read up a bit more on cruising the blog sites of others. I should have, but I didn’t. Now I am paying the price of not investigating this further. I did not post yesterday because I could not get my computer running well enough to do so. Friday evening, in my excitement of something new, I was cruising the blogs on this blogger to get more ideas. Major Mistake!!

Somewhere in this wonderful site as I was hitting the “next blog” button, I picked up several trojan viruses. Not even my very up to date, Norton virus protection nor the internet protection software caught them. I did a Trend Micro House Call and found them but not after they had already done their damage. I tried to dump the norton utilities and install Trend Micro’s software. To no avail. Norton would not uninstall correctly, and Trend Micro’s software will not install because it thinks the Norton is still there. I can’t get into my .ini file to manually fix it… and I am (as I type this) getting pop-ups galore. I did manage to download Adaware to get rid of the spyware, but it is not getting all of it as the pop-ups are still coming. So at some point today I will download Spybot and hope it gets the rest of the spyware. This still does not solve my virus protection.

If there is a techie out there with some advice I would greatly appreciate some help here!! I also picked up (somehow) MSN’s new beta version search bar and the dang thing will not uninstall either. I can’t get yahoo’s bar to come up with MSN’s on there… at least it has a pop-up blocker on it. I am to the point, in my frustration, of dumping my whole C: drive and starting over but I will lose some software that I can’t replace.

The point of my blog today is… why are some people so malicious that they would use this medium to ruin others PC’s? AND! Why is there not a warning in big bold letters in the sign up about it? If I had known this could happen I certainly would not have been cruising other blogs. This warning needs to be placed in the sign up section somewhere.

So here I sit, exposed and unprotected from further harm. Unsure where to turn next, and completely frustrated with the whole mess. Carlo is on 24 hour duty and unable to to post anything until later and he has no idea of the extent of the damage done here. My, what a surprise he will have eh? I guess I will spend most of the day today attempting to copy some files from my computer to CD’s in an attempt salvage them incase of a total dump and redo. Sigh… another hard lesson learned.

    Hi Phoenix —

Thanks very much for your encouraging comments on my blog! I’m glad I found yours now as well — I look forward to following the he said/she said discourse as it progresses. I’ll also link to your blog.

Sorry about the troubles with blog surfing. You might want to try using Firefox instead of Explorer, as its security features — especially as they relate to contracting viruses while surfing online — are far superior, from what I understand. In any case, I haven’t had any troubles despite clicking plenty of “next blog” buttons.

Good luck working through your computer difficulties. I’ll read you around!
